FERAL CHILDE
ABOUT THE NEW COLLECTION: For Spring/Summer 2012: THE AQUAKNOTS, Feral Childe explores the ocean deep. This season’s original prints feature the Feral Childe duo as deep sea divers among plankton, exotic coral and aquatic horses. Reflecting our process-based fine arts background, these prints were developed by combining wildly varied image-making techniques: for example, the Flowerstripe print is a collage of shapes cut from bright, individually painted watercolors, while the Plankton print is a cyanotype made by exposing a 3D-painting to light sensitive fabric (the painting was made on various layers of clear acetate sheets combining paint and meticulous, intricately-cut plankton-like frosted Mylar shapes). We worked side by side on these prints, drawing on the same sheet of paper, as in the ball-point pen derived print called Wipeout, which shows several versions of Jacques Cousteau's famous diving saucer. We started this print while waiting for the shuttle to the airport, as we sat in the lobby of the hotel in Doha, Qatar where we were visiting artists at Virginia Commonwealth University last spring.
From our take on summer basics to signature statement pieces, this season’s Feral Childe styles emphasize easy summer ensembles. The Spring 12 collection is on point with trends such as printed shorts (Anemone Shorts), feminine baseball jackets (Cousteau Jacket), stripes, a bright palette of corals (hello Pantone Tangerine Tango!) -- yet always with our timeless and unique twist on construction details such as shaped pockets, folded collars, creative tucks and pleating, extended placket, and more. Spring 2012’s fabrics include fine Italian metallic cotton, glazed linen, organic cotton, Cupro, Hempcel, and silk. At Feral Childe we strive for more sustainable production, using organic, sustainable, artisan-made, or repurposed fabrics; and manufacture everything in New York City.
